Models of the non-thermal emission from early-type binaries
نویسنده
چکیده
The powerful wind-wind collision in massive star binaries creates a region of high temperature plasma and accelerates particles to relativistic energies. I briefly summarize the hydrodynamics of the wind-wind interaction and the observational evidence, including recent γ-ray detections, of non-thermal emission from such systems. I then discuss existing models of the non-thermal emission and their application to date, before concluding with some future prospects.

Non - thermal emission processes in massive binaries ⋆
In this paper, I present a general discussion of several astrophysical processes likely to play a role in the production of non-thermal emission in massive stars, with emphasis on massive binaries. Even though the discussion will start in the radio domain where the non-thermal emission was first detected, the census of physical processes involved in the non-thermal emission from massive stars s...
متن کاملGamma-ray emission from Wolf-Rayet binaries
In the colliding wind region of early-type binaries, electrons can be accelerated up to relativistic energies displaying power-law spectra, as demonstrated by the detection of non-thermal radio emission from several WR+OB systems. The particle acceleration region, located between the stars, is exposed to strong photon fields in such a way that inverse Compton cooling of the electrons could resu...
متن کاملX-ray and Radio Emission from Colliding Stellar Winds
The collision of the hypersonic winds in early-type binaries produces shock heated gas, which radiates thermal X-ray emission, and relativistic electrons, which emit nonthermal radio emission. We review our current understanding of the emission in these spectral regions and discuss models which have been developed for the interpretation of this emission. Physical processes which affect the resu...

An increasing number of early-type (O and Wolf-Rayet) colliding wind binaries (CWBs) is known to accelerate particles up to relativistic energies. In this context, non-thermal emission processes such as inverse Compton (IC) scattering are expected to produce a high energy spectrum, in addition to the strong thermal emission from the shock-heated plasma. SIMBOL-X will be the ideal observatory to...
متن کاملParticle Acceleration in the Colliding Winds Binary Wr 140
RESUMEN Favor de proporcionar un resumen en español. If you cannot provide a spanish abstract, the editors will do this. Massive WR+O star systems produce high-temperature, shock-heated plasma where the wind of the WR star and that of its binary companion collide-the wind-collision region (WCR). The WCR is a source of thermal (e.g. hard X-rays) and non-thermal (e.g. synchrotron) emission, the l...
